About Wantage
Wantage, located in the middle of Oxfordshire’s Vale of the White Horse, started life as a small Roman settlement. It is the birthplace of King Alfred the Great and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Today, this popular market town sits at the crossing of the B4507 valley road, the A338 Oxford to Hungerford road, which intersects junction 14 of the M4 motorway and the A417 Reading to Cirencester road.
Regular bus services connect Wantage to Abingdon, Didcot, Faringdon, Oxford and the villages between. You can reach Oxford by bus in just 45 minutes.
The large market square in the town centre includes the famous statue of King Alfred surrounded by many shops with 18th century facades. Markets are still held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The surrounding villages are some of the most sought after in the south of England. They include East Hendred and Letcombe Regis, with the rolling countryside stretching down to Lambourn.
The population of Wantage has increased significantly in recent years as new housing has been added in several developments of both brownfield and greenfield sites. The increased population has also attracted commercial developments, including a new supermarket.
Schools and Education Wantage and the south Oxfordshire area offer a good choice of schools across all key stages (primary, secondary and sixth form). There is excellent secondary state education in Wantage, Abingdon, Didcot and nearby Compton, as well as a good selection of local primary schools. Private education is available at a primary level in Wantage and at all levels in Abingdon, Didcot, Oxford and Witney.
Sports and Leisure Wantage has a sports centre and several fitness centres. The local area supports amateur football, cricket and rugby teams, as well as many youth teams. The Wantage and Grove Directory is a good source of information about the many clubs and associations in the town.
